Since 2004, I have run Hanson Investments NW, Inc. an investment advisory firm.
From Fall 1999 until Summer 2005, I was an Instructor of Philosophy at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington (USA). I am completing my Ph.D. in philosophy at The University of Chicago. My dissertation is in contemporary political philosophy, and I taught in that area as well as ethics, applied ethics, philosophy of law, and philosophy and technology (especially the internet.) My philosophical orientation is practical, and I am very sympathetic to utilitarianism in its more recent, enlightened guises. I am especially interested and in exploring how the internet can improve education, foster community, and improve public deliberation.
When I can, I try to maintain a presence online. My contributions at fatwallet.com's finance board have recently been cited in the Wall Street Journal and US News, probably due to its often unorthodox bent. In the mid-late 1990s, I moonlighted as a computer consultant.
I was born in 1968, and am husband to Tonya Hanson, who runs her own law practice in Spokane. She graduated from Chicago's Law School in 1996. We met through Gonzaga's debate program, married in 1993, and had Joan, our first child, on Mother's Day 2004.
I have one brother, Steve Hanson, born in 1970, who is a Major in the US Army. My father Bob is happily retired. My mother Donna ran Catholic Charities of Spokane until her death from cancer on September 23, 2005.
I am an extrovert who loves serious oral and written conversations; an avid reader, swimmer, and fan of the dramatic arts; a generalist who struggles to keep from spreading himself too thin; and a longtime packrat who is attempting to mend his ways.
